If you have found this site because you are interested in purchasing my Ocean Catamaran 48.8 (Millennium Dragon) please click here. The Dragon was pulled out of the water at Gulf Marine Ways in Ft. Myers in Spring for fresh bottom paint, zincs and the engine maintenance recommended by Volvo Penta in the owner’s manual (new rubber sail drive diaphragms and lower unit shaft seals). Although I have never submitted an insurance claim my carrier has required submission of a marine survey prior to renewal of my policy. Any serious qualified buyer should consider a sea trial consisting of one of the options below followed by a haul out and inspection. A surveyor of your choice could then evaluate the Dragon and provide you with a purchaser’s survey report.
Millennium Dragon is an Ocean Catamaran 48.8 built in South Carolina in 1999 and launched for the millennium. The company now builds these boats on Johns Island near Charleston South Carolina. My wife Kathy and I have been sailing together since 1958. We lived aboard and cruised the Bahamas extensively during 2000, 2001 and 2002. We “reallocated” some assets and purchased a dock with a home attached in Punta Gorda Isles several years ago and focused our cruising on Charlotte Harbor, SW Florida and the Florida Keys. We have cruised the Florida Keys late Fall, Winter and Spring with side trips to Miami over the past several years.
I have recently been certified by the United States Coast Guard as a Captain with a 50 Ton Masters certificate (#1106931) with Towing and Sailing endorsements. I am also a US Sailing Instructor certified for both sail and powerboats. I have also completed US Sailing training in Race Management and Judging. I have recently completed the American Sailing Association instructor clinics for Basic Keelboat, Basic Coastal Cruising, Bare Boat Chartering, Coastal Navigation, and Cruising Catamaran. As Millennium Dragon is an “un-inspected vessel” I am able to carry up to six passengers for hire. Two or three couples would be the ideal number of folks for an evening dinner/sunset cruise. If you plan a vacation to SW Florida and are interested in a sunset cruise on Charlotte Harbor, contact me by E-mail (wingsailorflorida@yahoo.com) and if I am in the area, I would be happy to accommodate you.
For those interested in the cruising life and determined to get “out there” Millennium Dragon is available for sail training charter. The Dragon is a comfortable, fast retirement yacht, not a charter cattle-maran and as such has only two staterooms and two heads. There is a reasonably comfortable pilot berth on the guest (Port) side suitable for one adult and the settee table lowers for another double berth in the bridge deck salon.
SAIL Magazine recently announced its top 10 list of the greatest places to sail in the United States and Charlotte Harbor is second in recent polling This article, titled “Heavenly Harbors” considered Charlotte Harbor a topnotch destination. Charlotte Harbor is 20 miles long providing many cruising options. It is lined with mangrove forests and protected by the barrier islands guarding Boca Grande. Cayo Costa, to the south of the “Big Mouth” protects the ICW that takes you to Sanibel and Ft. Myers. Gasparilla Island and the town of Boca Grande guards the northern shore of the inlet and protects travelers on the north bound ICW leading to Venice and Sarasota.
I am interested in providing one or two week sail training charters for a family of three or two very friendly couples on Charlotte Harbor. The one week training charter is a “Cruise to Nowhere”. If the wind blows from the south, we could sail to Venice or Sarasota. If the wind blows from the north, we could sail to Sanibel Island, Ft. Myers Beach, Naples or Marco Island. Weather permitting, a two week cruise could include anchorages south including Marco Island, the Little Shark River, Islamorada, Key Vaca, Key West and the Dry Tortugas. Well in advance you will receive study materials and suggestions for clothing and food (victuals).
Although there will be time for shore exploration and some swimming/snorkeling, these cruises are primarily designed to provide novice and intermediate sailors the competence and confidence to bare boat charter a large sailing catamaran in the Caribbean Islands. You will victual the vessel having prepared your meal plan in advance. Special sailing, docking and anchoring techniques will be mastered. The charter guests will do the float plan, navigating, sailing, mooring and anchoring with my guidence. I will prepare breakfast and clean the galley afterward (at least until the charter guests understand water conservation). Lunch and dinner will be prepared on Millennium Dragon (when the chartering crew is not ashore at one of our fine Florida seafood restaurants). The catamaran sail training aboard this well equipped roomy vessel is not a luxurious trip to the carnival aboard an ocean liner. If you are after the cruise ship experience, book a week or two on a cruise ship. This is a “hands on” learning experience taking you places no cruise ship has gone before - with a focus on fun.
