Blue Moon was the first hull in a series of three built from extensively modified Kurt Hughes plans for a 4 meter trimaran. The original iteration was built wider to accomodate American butts. On one of the original sea trials a 15 to 18 knot wind came through Buttonwood Sound on the Bay Side of Key Largo at the Upper Keys Sail Club. The boat took a nose dive but didn’t flip. The waves did roll up the foredeck and into the cockpit. As a result of this experience, the boat was lengthened to almost 16’ (4.8 Meters) and a nose surface foil was added. A cockpit combing was also added. As a result, even when piercing a 3’ powerboat wake, the sea is split and the combing keeps any residual water out of the lap of the skipper. Surface foils are now being fabricated at the attachment point of the main (frwd) aka and amas. See the photos at the end of the album below.
